I KNOW WHAT I AM TP

(W/A) Gina Siciliano

Against the backdrop of a repressive and violent 17th Century Rome, I Know What I Am tells the story of female painter Artemisia Gentileschi. In a world where the Catholic Church controls everything, this extraordinary woman challenges the society she was born into and becomes a groundbreaking artist.

Using solely ballpoint pens, Seattle artist Gina Siciliano creates a unique work that interprets Renaissance and Baroque style through an entirely new lens. Bridging the modern "low" art of comics with the traditionally "high" art of painting, Siciliano comments on our forgotten past, the ways we define progress, and the history of women in art as a whole.

Volume 1 NEW EDITION! The True Story of Artemisia Gentileschi

A period full of philosophers, criminals, plagues, inquisitions, lecherous church officials and high-profile artist celebrities is the backdrop for this graphic novel series that serves as both an art history lesson and a coming-of-age father/daughter story, as well as a new look at the history of sexual violence.

With the help of a family friend, Artemisia and her father take the perpetrator to court, sparking a complex and suspenseful battle both similar to and different from contemporary legal practice.

THE SLEEPER AND THE SPINDLE

(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) Chris Riddell

In this thrillingly reimagined fairy tale from the truly magical combination of author Neil Gaiman and illustrator Chris Riddell, the tales of Snow White (sort of) and Sleeping Beauty (almost) are woven together with a thread of dark magic. On the eve of her wedding, a young queen sets out to rescue a princess from an enchantment. The queen casts aside her fine wedding clothes, takes up her chain mail and her sword, and follows her three brave dwarf companions into the tunnels under the mountain toward the sleeping kingdom, intent on saving the princess and deciding her own future. Alas, the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. The result is a captivating and darkly funny tale that will hold readers spellbound from start to finish.

A NEW ERA FOR DC COMICS

Reading Multiversity and Convergence together clears the slate for creators playing with the DC characters and settings to go where their imaginations lead. Plenty of room, still, for continuity heavy storylines to continue, but ultimately there is more room, now, for creators to tell stories that are unburdened by 75 years of forced continuity.

Kudos to DC Comics, Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Dan DiDio and Jim Lee for really making it work. I look forward to seeing where the next wave of creators will take your characters.

"Ms. Cullen's writing is lyrical and touching, the rhythms and characters stick in your mind like a really good tune. I have the feeling she could write about tin cans and readers would come away with a sense of satisfaction and wonder"

WHY WE LOVE IT: We've all spent hours glued to episodes of shows like True Detective
and House of Cards that explore deeply flawed and morally complex characters. In
BUTTERFLY, screenwriter Arash Amel (Grace of Monaco, Erased) brings that aesthetic
to comics and the espionage genre, exploring the true nature of people who devote their
lives to covert ops and the deceit, solitude, and violence that comes with it.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Marguerite Bennett has been making a name for herself with her
work on Lois Lane, Batgirl, and Earth 2: World's End and we can't wait for fans to see
how she explores the dark world of spycraft. There's no one better in the espionage genre
than Antonio Fuso, the artist behind the critically acclaimed run of GI Joe: Cobra. It's the
perfect creative team for a morally complex story of violence and family set in the web of a
global conspiracy.
